Mary Jo Austin’s beach paintings are her response to the Jersey Shore, a place that holds warm memories since her childhood and where she now resides in Lavallette. The artist states, “I enjoy the crowded movement and many colors that summer brings. I enjoy the sweet melancholy of September when the gulls reclaim the sand. I’m attracted to the pull of opposites...” Mary Jo received a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Maryland and a M.A. with a Fine Art concentration in painting from Montclair University. She taught art in schools for twenty-six years and currently teaches painting to adults at the Ocean County Artists’ Guild in Island Heights and at the Greenbriar Adult Community in Bricktown. Her award-winning work has appeared in numerous shows and exhibits.
